On the art of bone collecting...
At the moment, I'm finding the act of writing a little like field paleontology. You go out and dig somewhere you think there may be something. Sometimes there's nothing there at all. Sometimes there's junk, bits and pieces of worthless detritus. But sometimes, just sometimes, there's something good. Short stories are like fossils for me. Generally they're complete animals, even if only skeletons and a hint of an outline. The only work to do is to fill in the gaps, flesh it out, make it come alive. That's how my story for the latest sekrit projekt came to me, and more recently (ie, last night) the story for jennifer_brozek's project, though I'm not sure if that story is any good yet, there's still a lot of dirt on it to be cleaned off. But no time for that right now, i have to make some field notes then put it aside for later inspection. No, right now is novel time. And novels are like the bigger dinosaurs, in that they aren't discovered fully formed and clear. They come in pieces, large and small, dug up over weeks and months and, yeah, sometimes years. And sometimes you think you've assembled all the bones correctly, only to discover more bones later on and realise that you made some mistakes in your initial assembly. That's the stage I'm at right now. I thought I had a complete skeleton, only to find more bones in the pit. So I have to add those bones to the big picture, and rearrange the ones I'd already found. Some of them may not even be the right bones at all, might come from a different animal altogether. But in the end, I will have my dinosaur. And it will have big teeth and big claws, and yea, it will make the earth tremble beneath its mighty feet. And yes, I am avoiding getting started on this... how could you tell??? |

Ba humbug
Both Baby_B and I have 'cold and flu like symptoms' which are pretty mild but very tiring and annoying. Baby_B had a fever last night, but responded well to panadol and she managed to sleep for the rest of the night after some midnight cuddles and pats. I have been very short of breath and wheezy for the past week too, which has been making it difficult to sleep, I thought it might be some kind of asthma thing, but it looks like it might just be cold related. The most annoying thing is that being pregnant most of my usual trusty methods of making this sort of stuff go away are now unavailable to me, so for now it might be just a case of lots of fluids, some zinc tablets, and maybe a saline nose spray. I am really hoping that we get well and truly over it by the time I go into labour (I am 37 weeks now, so it is most likely I will be fine in time, Baby_B was 40 weeks and 4 days) I have been feeling really quite strong and healthy up until now but after this week I just don't feel well enough at all to go through labour let alone look after a new baby and a sick toddler. Blergh. |

Nobody has ever called me Simon
I just got addressed as Paul today. It doesn't happen all that often, but when people get my first name wrong, it is pretty much always to call me Paul. I have nothing against the name, and getting called the wrong name doesn't worry me much, but it is just odd that it is usually the same name. I have a couple of theories. One idea is that it is just one of those combinations that go together automatically - how else to explain all those David Thompsons or John Smiths. On the other hand, I have never actually met anybody with the name combination in question and I cant see any particular family history of it - lots of Richards, Peters and Grenvilles but no Pauls. Although our mother informed us that my sister would have been called Paul if she had turned up as a boy. The other theory is that folk are remembering an old radio/tv series. In today's case, the person in question would have been born long after the series was well and truly over. |

Life. Blink blink
Weekend. It went past. Did I do anything productive? I'm not sure. ( long dribblings and ramblings this way )rain? who wants some? we got some of the hard stuff pelting our roof at the moment. Wind is back up to a consistent 35 knots with gusts up to 45. The kids really did not like the huge clap of thunder that sounded directly overhead at about 10pm. They all wanted to be on our laps. Except Spooty, who just didn't seem to care that the sky was falling in. Current Mood: tiredCurrent Music: Depeche Mode - Freelove |

Adrenaline Boost
Well, we now have proof that lightning can cause levitation. In the sense of bounce off the mattress with a " WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT!!!!???" when a very loud one goes off, by the sounds of it, 3 metres outside my bedroom window. At least it was promptly followed by more of the same, thus making it unlikely that the Kwinana industrial strip had just exploded, which was my first thought. Current Mood: awakeCurrent Music: pounding heart |

No Mascara Neccesary
One of the technicians at work brought in another beetle for me to ID. She'll be pleased to learn, hopefully, that it's the same species It, as it happens, is the same species that appeared in the apparently defunct wtf_nature group some years back, IIRC, but it was never IDed there It's a Feather-horned Beetle, of the genus Rhipicera Photo by Certified SuVery little is known about the Family Rhipiceridae - the only one science has larvae for is from North America, where it's a parasite on cicadas. But they all have fantastic antennae. ( TOLweb photo here - close-up by Su, here ) |

It's been a while since I've written, but new relationship foo plus holidays to Daylesford plus more new relationship foo plus work have made me lazier than usual. Difficult, I know, but there you have it. Relationship wise, things are going well. Skippy and I have been doing a lot together. Much of it is stuff I've not done in ages or never done before: bowling (I still suck), movies, going to the football and playing various games with his friends. This includes the beginnings of teaching me to play Magic, which I'm enjoying but finding a little difficult to follow because it relies pretty heavily on knowing what cards other players have out on the table. Since there's a huge number of cards (we're talking tens of thousands), memorising the decks is not a good strategy. I'll work something out. The games stuff in particular has been with a group of his friends who all play together. I haven't introduced him to many of my friends yet; my circle of friends is (a) all across the damn country and (b) not really a cohesive group even when you get down to the people in one city. So that will be a slow process. ( Daylesford trip and miscellaneous ) Current Mood: cheerful |

Watching the X Files post slash discovery
We are watching old episodes of the X Files and tonight we have the season 2 ep where Krychek is first introduced. I am feeling really puerile, but the sub-text feels barely even sub in this one and I can't stop myself from saying lots of "oooh loveers" like a 12 year old. It's quite a lot of fun :) Ah poor Krychek, Molder might sleep with you, but he will never love you the way he loves Skinner. |

The little boy has found the best hiding place ever in the game of hide-and-seek in the tall forest - neither he nor his family knows yet that he's lost. The wave is several metres tall, running across the ocean from an earthquake, and it breaks over the cliffside road we're standing on and touches us softly as it flows over us. |

Have you done six impossible things this morning? Or, the pain of leaving things until the last minute...So, as astute readers may recall, the last three months were supposed to be spent working on finishing up a novel to a point ready for submission. And, if you're astute enough to remember MaNoWaMo and MaNoPoMo, you also realise that I didn't do any of it at all. Now there are two work weeks to go before the end of July, which is the deadline I set for myself. A sane person would accept that they've left it far too late, and give up on the deadline. As astute readers may recall, I am not a sane person. So, the plan. I need to write another 30000-40000 words of the novel to bring it up to publishable length, and edit the entire thing into some kind of shape. In other words, to complete both MaNoWaMo and MaNoPoMo. Two months of work. In ten working days. Piece of cake. Write at least six thousand words a day for the first week. Once that's done, edit twenty thousand words a day every day for the second week. Sounds reasonable. Did I mention next week is orientation week at the uni I work at? One of our busiest times? Like I said, piece of cake... *twitch* |

Being a mother - Reading TV
While I was watching *Children of Earth* I was aware that my response was affected by being a parent. I think my experiences impact on my reading of texts. Here are some comments on *Lost*, *Veronica Mars* and *Children of Earth* - spoilers. ( Read more... ) |
